Signing of the lease or rental contract
A mandatory document for any rental
- The rental contract or "lease" sets the rules which will govern your occupation of the premises, its duration, the conditions of payment of the rent and those of its termination
- These rules are determined by French housing laws
The procedure
- It must be drawn up in writing, dated and signed by both parties (tenant and lessor)
- It is possible that the joint surety (your guarantor) will be called upon to sign it as well
- A home insurance contract or proof of subscription is required when signing the lease

- Can I sign a lease remotely ? Sometimes! The electronic lease or by mailing is more and more requested. You should ask this question to the landlord or real estate agent when you meet.
- Do I have to keep my lease ? It is imperative to keep your lease until it is terminated (until you leave the premises). It can also be used as proof of address if necessary.
